Week Five; A glimmer of light

As another week-end begins and we plan our frenetic range of activities, all based in or around our home it would seem that an easing of our lockdown rules may be on the horizon.

Activities we took for granted and denied to us for the past weeks, will be savoured and enjoyed, as hopefully restrictions may be slowly lifted.

My language is full of caution because we don't yet know what will be permitted.

I am looking forward to meeting up with my walking friends and going on one of our countryside walks chatting and catching up with all the news. Meeting up with my family ranks top of the list, as well as in the more distant future being able to travel once more into London and ……. even further afield.

Meanwhile have a good week-end and let me know if you're logging in to our Forum.

On this forum we have discussed books, websites, paintings and the enjoyment to be gained from observing nature. Walking locally or further afield is full of pleasure although I must admit to missing the drink and packet of crisps at the pub that has become customary at the end of a walk.

When it rains what do we do? Well a friend has introduced me to a series of videos on YouTube which for me have filled that exercise gap. They are found via Walk a Mile where there are a number of variations to choose from.

One of my favourites is a 15 min exercise, it's quick, relatively painless and gets the heart pumping! Basically it is walking with some kicks, side-steps and arm exercises led by an extremely lively American lady and her group. The premise is that once completed you have walked a mile. I haven't tested that but I enjoy them and better still spend the remainder of the day feeling virtuous.

On my walk round my local park I bumped into a friend, on these walks one of the most delightful events is the chance meeting. Standing at the correct distance we were able to have a chat and catch-up on our activities. These were of necessity rather limited but nevertheless just to see someone and socialise is so pleasant and so important to our well being.

I am hopeful that eventually we will all be able to meet our family and friends and for those keen gardeners, show off all that hard work.

I don't include myself in that group as I must now admit that I prefer to sit in the garden rather than work in it. However I do enjoy visiting gardens and admire the work that goes into the wonderful floral displays created by the gardeners

Radio Four has been airing Neil MacGregor's series " A History of the World in 100 Objects. It was first played in 2010 in 15 min slots at 1.45 pm. I remember listening to it when I could and found it fascinating. The way in which starting with one, often small object that one might walk past, Neil Mac Gregor spun it out into a glimpse into history and how it influenced the progress of civilisation.
I bought the book, as I missed so many of his mini lectures. Returning to it now, I see that I begun to tick off those objects I went to see at the museum, 20 are ticked off in no particular order. I imagine life got in the way and my grand project fell by the wayside. So there is another aim to add to my list of what to do in the future. Go back to the British Museum and continue my quest to see all 100 objects.
