My eyes usually glaze over when anyone mentions the word app. However, when I first came across the free app Smartify, I was able (without assistance) to download it on to my smartphone, so it must have been remarkably easy to do!
The home page contains a wealth of information about artists, artworks and galleries and you can search for individual names and titles. If you click on Explore you can scroll down an international list of galleries and museums and click on the ones you want to view.
There is a scanning facility which allows you to hold your phone up to an artwork to have it identified. I have tried this in my house, where I don’t unfortunately, have any original works of great art, but I was amazed that it recognised some of my Art Nouveau prints (specifically Mackintosh and Mucha). I look forward to using it in art galleries after the lockdown – perhaps in Vienna (this is a plug for Falmouth’s trip to the city next May http://theartssocietyfalmouth.org/downloads/2019-2020/VIENNAKLIMTTASFALMOUTH.pdf ).
BBC Arts Editor, Will Gompertz, has called Smartify “ …the most elegant, unobtrusive, information-rich gallery guide I've seen… “ So on your smartphone, go to https://smartify.org/ , download the app, and see if you agree with him. .
